The downside of warmer weather is that it brings out the flies. We know how annoying they can be, but they can be detrimental for animal health too!
Shear sheep: less wool means quicker identification of fly strike when it occurs, but also lessens the risk of fly strike in the beginning - fly larvae don't like the sun!
Dag/crutch sheep: this entails clipping the wool around the rear end of your sheep to prevent and get rid of dags. These smelly areas are very enticing to flies.
Control worms with drenching protocols: internal parasites can cause diarrhoea and this can attract flies.
Treat sheep with insecticides e.g. Zapp Encore or Maggo.
