Over the past two years Ian Hodge, Adrian Joe and Seve Cranefield have developed a programme specifically targeted at reducing BMSCC and clinical mastitis incidence. This service was initially established as an extension of Adrian's mastitis consultancy business and involved him working alongside Ian for an extended period so that Ian could learn all the skills needed to deliver a top quality service with consistent successes.. Together with Dr Steve Cranefield, based in Te Awamutu, the team have developed a milking visit protocol that comprehensively assesses all aspects of the milking machine and its interaction with the cows.

Making an average improvement in the bulk milk somatic cell count of 30%, resulting from a combination of reducing new clinical cases, improved teat health, more comfortable cows with improved milk out and milking efficiency. To date they have completed about 150 visits in the South Island with consistent reductions in BMSCC and lower clinical mastitis
As a result of their successes, they were encouraged to expand the service outside of our veterinary practices. As a result, PureMilk mastitis consultancy is the name of a new initiative by Riverside Veterinary Services and The Veterinary Enterprises Group. It is a consultancy service with the sole aim of lowering BMSCCs, reducing clinical mastitis and improving milking efficiency through a comprehensive control programme. The initiators of the programme deliver the service,  Ian Hodge, Adrian Joe and Steve Cranefield.

All milking management visits to our clients from now on will be delivered under the PureMilk mastitis consultancy brand  and will assess the following in detail
·         Vacuum and pulsation
·         Liner dimensions
·         Teat end health
·         Milk out
·         Teat disinfection
·         Cluster positioning
·         Automatic cup removal systems
·         Milking management
Following the visit you will receive a summary of the findings and a series of recommendations that need to be addressed immediately. Subsequently you will receive a full written report.
If appropriate, they offer on farm staff education workshops to help achieve the goals and targets that are identified during the visit.
The farms they work with will be enrolled in Infovet which enables us to monitor the bulk milk somatic cell count of the herd, and other aspects of mastitis that will alert us to an emerging problem.
If you feel there is room for improvement in the level of mastitis in your herd, and improvements in the way your cows are milked please contact us.
