Meet Our Pet Vets

Our pet vet team can’t wait to meet you and your new animal or long-term friend in one of our NZ pet veterinarian clinics. Hopefully we’ll see you for a routine check-up and cuddle, rather than an emergency, but your animal is in safe hands with our pet vets either way. For now, our pet veterinarians would like to take the opportunity to tell you a little bit about themselves. This way you’ll see a familiar face when you pop into one of our 16 clinics.

Abby Carruthers
Vet Nurse

Abby has worked at the clinic nearly every Saturday for the past three years – our weekend Angel. She squeezes us in between her full-time job as a legal secretary and building a house with her partner Tony. Abby enjoys her weekly fix at the clinic as it preserves her vet nursing training and it allows her to indulge her passion for animals. Abby has become a great “all-rounder” and is now adept in product knowledge, customer service, animal handling, monitoring surgeries, assisting the Vet and patient aftercare. When she manages to steal some time for herself, Abby enjoys playing netball and tennis, music and socialising. Abby cohabitates with a cat called Tui and Monty the dog.

I was born and schooled in England and gained two degrees in Zoology with Physiology and Osteopathy. I then did a conversion course from human to animal Osteopathy and started my own practice in human and animal osteopathy as well as working as an Osteopath in a GP’s practice. However, I only ever wanted to be a vet. I met my Irish husband Colin, in the UK, and we married in my local village in 2000 at a James Bond themed wedding. Great fun for all – with a casino at the reception and everyone dressed up in character – it was a cool day! We then honeymooned in NZ before emigrating in February 2001. After travelling around in a campervan for months we bought a house in Napier and I started at Massey Vet School and was accepted onto the course as a NZ permanent resident. At last I was going to be a vet!! My life’s Dream was going to become reality! I graduated and was accepted by VetEnt to start work in Wairoa. Wairoa is a mixed practice and I absolutely love my job. I have been in Wairoa for over 5 years now and am very happy. I love the variety of cases that I get to see on a daily basis. . I am currently studying for a Masters in Veterinary Medicine (MVM) in my spare time while working fulltime in Wairoa. My special interest in Veterinary Science is Ophthalmology. I also enjoy surgery. I have a three year old son called Teigan who delights and surprises us every day! Some of my vet work has rubbed off on him. He can often be heard talking his way through a surgery – for example “I’m going to surgery on this dog because he ate a stone and it got stuck in his intestines”. As a family we enjoy the outdoors, tramping, cycling and adventure racing. We also have a menagerie of rescued pets including a dog with 3 legs, a heading dog that is scared of sheep, various chickens, a bald lorikeet and a crazy cat.

Amanda Charman
Clinic Coordinator - Halswell/Vet Nurse

Hi I'm Amanda. My life-long passion for animals led me to return back to study to complete my National Certificate in Veterinary nursing in 2011 through CPIT. At the beginning of 2011 I started working between the Vetent clinics Lincoln and Halswell, although I am now permanently based at the Halswell Clinic. The aspects I enjoy the most about my job is working within a great team environment, as well as the interaction with clients and their pets.  I enjoy the continuous everyday learning within my role, and look forward to on going education to put into practice within the clinic. I live on a dairy farm in Greenpark, which is just out of the small town of Lincoln with my partner Matt and our three sons, along with a variety of pets including dogs, cats, birds, sheep and hens. In my spare time I enjoy movie nights, jet skiing and fishing with my sons, spending time with my family and catching up with friends.
